For the sake of the many millions of students and instructors, it appears that the educational system is always looking for methods to improve. In order to improve the learning experience for both students and instructors, it may be necessary to design new and more effective teaching methods or simply update the current curriculum. However, it would be appropriate to challenge one of the most prevalent habits that has permeated the educational system, namely homework. This is required owing of the many drawbacks that have been linked to homework, notably too much homework, as well as the general efficacy of it for certain age groups. Depending on how a teacher uses homework, it may be very beneficial in terms of improving academic accomplishment, reinforcing what you have learned, and helping you form excellent study habits. This article will discuss in detail why the educational system has to alter its approach to homework in order to balance the benefits and drawbacks that it has on pupils.

Many individuals are unaware of the full extent of the harm that homework can bring to a kid. One thing homework has been demonstrated to affect is a student’s degree of participation in extracurricular activities. (Wilde 498) This research demonstrates that the overwhelming majority of the students who responded to his survey were perpetually anxious, and an even greater number of them also suffered medical symptoms related to their stress. It is now obvious that everyone experiences stress at some point in their lives, and you might make the case that this stress would better prepare the pupils for maturity. Why is this true? It might be because of a difficult home situation or a desire to support their family. Many students already endure a great deal of stress. Therefore, in my opinion, it makes sense to implement measures that would assist the educational system manage or lessen the stress that students experience. Some of the recommended measures that I have drawn from my study are as basic as raising the bar for homework assignments. In order to convey to students that homework counts and isn’t simply a scheme to make them unhappy, “homework should also be vital to the following day’s classwork” (Begley 1). This would provide kids more time for extracurricular activities and enable them to have a good connection with their schoolwork, or at the very least see it as a resource rather than a hassle. I think the level of stress students experience would decrease if the educational system took these steps.

The efficiency of homework is the last topic I will discuss. As long as it adheres to the aforementioned recommendations, homework has been shown to be a tremendous advantage from middle school forward. But several studies have shown the futility of assigning homework before to middle school. We see an illustration of this in this study. The increased amount of schoolwork only causes young kids to see it negatively. Additionally, not every child learns in the same way. For instance, I learn quickly and don’t need a lot of homework to understand a subject. Because of this, educators should make accommodations for each student or do their best to do so, maybe by making homework optional as long as you can demonstrate via the examinations that the students have mastered the material. I believe that by not making young pupils do homework that doesn’t really benefit them, we might lessen the resentment that many children have toward schoolwork at this early age.

Overall, it is evident that homework is a highly complex subject with a great deal of advantages for students, but these advantages also come with all the disadvantages. These include the fact that it causes stress, reduces kids’ involvement in both school and extracurricular activities, and is not helpful to everyone. The difficulty is in figuring out how to strike a balance between these impacts such that homework is really a valuable tool for pupils to employ.
