This formula by Robert Gunning calculates a weighted average of the number of words per sentence and the number of long words per word. The index score then generates grade levels between 0 and 20 that estimates the level of education required to understand a text. An index of six is readable by a 6th grade, while an index of 17 is readable by a college graduate.
